Good Reads Summary:
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's..

My Review:

The first thing that caught my eye about this book was the spectular cover. The picture was amazing and the red dress was so vibrant against the rest of the book. I decided to read this book after I heard so many great reviews about it. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. This book lived up to the hype.

I love mythology books and this one is a retelling of the Persephone & Hades tale. We start this book out by meeting Nikki and Cole. The world building in this book was incredible. The Everneath seemed so real. The author really did an excellent job of depicting it.

We learn that Nikki only has a certain amount of time left before she will be doomed to the Everneath forever. She decides to spend what little time she has left back with her family while she can. We are introduced to Cole who wants her to stay with him and eventually rule Everneath.  I felt drawn to Cole and could see why Nikki was drawn to him at first. He is the broody, mysterious guy that girls fall for. He just had a way about him that can appeal to girls that love bad boys. I felt that underneath the facade he really cared for Nikki though.

We find out as Nikki gets into her normal routine again that the boy she left behind Jack is still in love with her. I loved Jack early on. He seemed to really love Nikki for who she was faults and all. I loved how she gor through her time in the Everneath by never forgetting Jack. Their love was just so easy and geniue. They were just made to be together.

As the story continues there are some twists that threw me for a loop. I can say the author wrote an amazing story and this was a great take on an old tale. I cried at the ending and was just as heartbroken as Nikki. I love great cliffhanger endings and this one didn't dissappoint. I definitely can't wait until the next book comes out.

Overall this is a must read. The writing was superb. The story was paced just right and wasn't too fast or slow. I loved all the mystery that was weaved into the book along with the amazing romance. I can't wait to see how Nikki and Jack's story plays out. I also can't wait to learn more about Cole and what he will do now. This book is highly recommend and a great read for lovers of mythology.

About the Author:

Because of two parents who were Greek myth geeks, I grew up thinking the latest fashion trends were inspired by Aphrodite, and a good conversational opener was, “So, which mythological character do you most resemble?” Despite these social shortcomings, I found a great husband who’s always my first reader. We live in Utah with our two young boys, who still have no idea why I'm at the computer all the time.

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Utah and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

Guest Post: Until Next Time Tour

“The Allure of the Wings”

As this amazing blog tour winds down and I get to ‘appear’ on this fantastic site, I wanted to take a second to really speak about the Angel Chronicle series. Until Next Time was well-received by all of you out there, and you have no idea how humbled I am by that - but the greatest part for me is that Emily and Matt have become a part of your lives and imaginations, so that’s something we can all share without ever meeting each other.

Ten years ago angels were not ‘in.’ In fact, the form responses from agents and publishers were a mile long turning Emily and Matt down (if you’re a writer you’ll know all about this one). Among those, when I would receive an actual response from a real, live person, the message was always the same: angels could never be a large part of the literary world - especially YA fiction - because of the fact that readers wouldn’t accept religion. I was younger then, guys, and that particular line upset me for the simple fact that Emily and Matt are not about religion.

I know, there are some shaking of the heads out there, but they really aren’t. They are two teens who come from an extraordinary place who have to figure out life. They have to defend, protect, go up against some serious bad guys, and fall in love - and they have to do this in a place they’ve never been before with only the ‘remembrance’ of each other to get them through. Like any other teen, when they go ‘home’ they go to a place with teachers and friends who’ve helped them along the way. Maybe their home has more cool magical stuff in it, but it’s still home.

When you read Until Next Time, Emily is very much a girl who believes in her training and her best friend, but she still feels like she’s out there fluttering in the breeze. When she gets mad or confused, she goes home and finds her friends sitting around playing cards, racing horses, and just having a good time in their ‘lives.’ And when she and Matt need help or a shoulder to cry on, they talk to their brother or their father - just like the rest of us do. They get mad, happy, sad, devastated and confused as they head through life trying to figure out who, in fact, they really are.

I am very pleased that the majority of readers are not labeling Matt and Emily with ‘religious overtones’ - whatever that may be. Emily, like the author, has a hard time with all of it and lives every day trying to figure out why there’s so much negative stuff IF all this stuff we believe in is supposedly true. And Matt - well…Matt’s that guy who wants to be the star quarterback and the warrior hero, but his good will and kindness sort of go right out the window when he’s faced with losing love, so he’s struggling, too. You know…like all of us normal people. J

In the end, as these books go forward, I hope all readers really get the gist of what Emily and Matt are all about. The only thing they, and everyone else around them want, is to bring back the belief we used to have in ourselves. They offer hope, and they take people away from the bad economy, jobless rates, hating high school, wanting that perfect boyfriend or girlfriend, and the harshness that comes from trying to figure out who we are as we grow up. Divinity is in our hearts; it’s not in a book or a term; it’s not about what or who you believe in - it’s all about having the faith and hope in your heart for another. Emily and Matt have that for each other, and no matter what happens (hopefully) they will keep that no matter what the cost.

This is for readers, authors, and anyone who has an imagination. Never accept ‘no’ - not when you ‘know’ that what you’re trying to say encompasses everyone out there. The ‘winged ones’ have an allure that’s not based on religion, they’re simply the best friend you wish you knew, and everyone can come to love the fact that the only thing Emily and Matt can count on is THEIR best friend. Next up for them…some war, some heartache, some adventure in a gilded world, and a completely ‘out-of-the-box’ twist where all that true love is concerned.

Until Next Time, Everybody!

Candlewax Author Interview - GEMS!!

From Burgandy Ice @ Colorimetry...

by C. Bailey Sims

A medieval masterpiece of adventure, romance and horror, younger readers of Paolini and Cashore will gobble up this award-winning debut.

Title: Candlewax
About The Book: 384 pages
Expected publication: April 3rd 2012
Published by: Terabyte Press
About The Book: An Ancient Prophecy. A Powerful Relic. An Insatiable Evil. When all three converge, the fate of every living thing will be in peril. All her life Catherine had hoped to see a fairrier cat. No book, no scroll provided to her by her tutors had ever mentioned this legend, much to her frustration, and now-at the worse possible time-she was getting her wish. Only, in her wish the cat wasn't about to kill her. A 732-year-old fairrier cat the size of a horse has killed his fair share of hunters. Driven to the brink of extinction for the supernatural powers of his coat, is he indeed the last of his kind? Sheltered, 16-year-old Catherine is about to find out. Unwitting heir to the Ancient Onyxes, she flees an arranged marriage only to stumble upon the cat's secrets, the force of the ancient relic she wears, and the dangerous mission they must undertake. Hidden under a desert that was once a fertile land, millions of predators are waiting to feast again. Catherine must discover the secret of the Ancient Onyxes and stop the creatures known as trodliks before they consume everything in their path. A whispered prophecy becomes her only guide and a rejected suitor just might be the one warrior she desperately needs.

Join The Hollow Tours for a MONTH LONG TOUR!  On April 3rd, The Hollow Tours will REVEAL the art on the BACK COVER of Candlewax

I am very happy to share the following Author Interview. One of the interwoven themes in Candlewax is gems, their color, meaning, significance. I love themes with hidden depths. I love getting an author's insight behind the scenes of a book. This is just enough to be enticing... enough to inspire MORE questions. With no further ado, I give you...

The Gems of Candlewax

Author Interview with C. Bailey Sims

There are lots of gems woven throughout the story of Candlewax, aren’t there?

There is definitely a sub-theme of gems going on. To start with, we have the protagonist, 16-year-old Princess Catherine of Crystallia—whose whole kingdom depends on the trading of crystals that are mined there. She’s a wealthy girl.

But her onyx and silver amulet is rather humble looking, isn’t it?

You’re right. Onyx is not a flashy gemstone. It’s black, opaque and polished smooth rather than cut. Silver goes well with it, aesthetically. Still, the craftsmanship of the amulet is quite beautiful.

What about the gem on the dagger?

The dagger is Catherine’s other important heirloom so it had to be memorable. There is an amethyst crystal set into the thistle-blossom crest of Crystallia on the dagger’s handle.

So that’s Catherine’s dagger on the front cover of Candlewax?

Yup. Terabyte Press used the dagger for the front cover art so that guys would feel as comfortable as girls picking up the book. It looks kind of like a sword, which is correct for a medieval dagger.

Is there a reason you picked amethyst?

Yeah, it’s the perfect color purple for a thistle blossom. Amethyst is a gem that represents sobriety, and you certainly want to have your wits about you if you are wielding a deadly weapon like Catherine’s dagger!

And does onyx represent anything in particular?

Yes. Weird how it happened, but I selected onyx intuitively, and later found out that it is thought to have warding capabilities. Perfect for Catherine’s amulet!

What about the silver of the amulet?

Ahh. Silver, or argentum if you want the Latin word, conducts electricity better than any other element and is the most reflective. In the story, Catherine feels the amulet grow warmer to her touch. It responds to her. Since pure silver never tarnishes, the necklace is never dull. I have a pure silver ring and it’s true—I never have to polish it.

Dawn of the Angels

Authors: Vivieene Malynn & Sean Kade

Publisher: Sutherland Press (January 3, 2012)

Series: Angel Realms Book #1

Age Rating: 13+

My Rating: 5 Stars

Summary

Left by her mother at a young age, Kyra has grown-up in the foster system, leaving her angry and hateful towards the world. The only person she can trust is Hammond, her case worker who has watched over her since the time her mother left. When Hammond places Kyra in a foster home located in a small town, strange things begin happening and Kyra starts unraveling the mystery of her past. When Kyra’s life is threatened, she is saved by an angel, her guardian angel, Ashur, who falls from heaven to save her. Together, Ashur and Kyra must figure out why her life is in danger and stop a strange cult from bringing about the end of days.

Review
Dawn of the Angels by Vivieene Malynn & Sean Kade captured my attention immediately and intrigued my imagination pushing it farther than any other Angel Genre has. Kyra is young girl trapped in a endless loop of foster homes. On her 17th birthday her world changes with a letter and mysterious locket from her crazed mother. She is then moved to a small strange town where darkness seems to reach for her and locals stare with worried eyes.
When I first started this book I expected something along the lines of Fallen by Lauren Kate or Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick where the male protagonist is a fallen angel and the female protagonist is hopeless without him (by no means am I attempting to put down these books. I in all honesty love them). However, Dawn of the Angels (like so many books I have read recently) surprised me. Kyra is not a weak protagonist. She is a strong, stubborn, and independent character that with each page turn I respected more and more. I also have to give kudos to the authors for capturing her personality so well. Through out the book it is clear that Kyra is dealing with a lot of anger concerning her situation. The authors did a fabulous job at capturing this emotion and the struggle Kyra has with it. I also enjoyed the way the suspense was built up. In many books the suspense is concluded within the first few chapters leaving nothing for the reader to imagine for the rest of the story. Other times there is too much suspense without relief leaving the reader bored and unsatisfied. Maylynn and Kade did an excellent job with the fragile balance between not enough and too much.
Dawn of the Angels is a fast read not because it is simply written, but it has a way of drawing the reader in. I could not believe how fast time went by when I was reading this. What I thought was an hour turned into two hours without notice. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good YA Paranormal read. It has become one of my all time favorites.

On April 3th The Hollow Tours will be doing a REVEAL of the art on the BACK COVER of Candlewax which no one has seen unless they have a trade paperback of the ARC.

Im SO happy to be a part of the Hollow Tours!
I could NOT believe when Jessica told me we would be reviewing this book for the tour!  I was so surprised when I got to be the one to do a guest post with C. Bailey Sims on Fairrier Cat Fur!  This stuff is crazy insane but cool as ****!

Running with Fairrier Cat Fur (minor spoiler alert!)
by C. Bailey Sims

Q. In Candlewax the characters spend a lot of time running. Did you
write that into the story for a reason?

A. I don't think I consciously chose to do that. It just sort of
happened and I "ran with it" heh, heh. But those scenes did not come
out of thin air because I used to love track and field in high school
and I was also a collegiate sprinter and long jumper.

Q. The story makes running seem like so much fun.

A. Running really fast when you are in great shape is one of the most
exhilarating things you can do. Your arms flow and your legs stretch
out into long strides. Time slows and you fly through space. I wanted
my characters to have a little fun with running and it was vicarious
for me, too.

Q. But it's the fairrier cat fur that makes them run so fast, right?

A. Yes, absolutely! With a little fur in their socks, Catherine and
her friends can run like fairrier cats--FAST! They are also more
graceful and intuitive with their running--leaping over fallen logs,
bounding off snow-covered stones with no loss of balance. It's natural
for them and they feel good about it.  If you ever watch the summer
Olympics you might notice that some of the best sprinters don't get
all tight fisted and tense-- they're fluid.

Q. Spelopokos the fairrier cat doesn't tell Catherine any of this when
he gives her some of his fur, does he?

A. No, he's very low key about it. Ha! That was rather mischievious of
him, wasn't it?

Q. What are some of the other side effects of the fur?

A. All sorts of good things cat-like things rub off on the people
lucky enough to have  fairrier cat fur in their socks. You might
notice some of the advantages when--as you read--you run along with
Catherine. May your feet be swift and free!
